Just a partial response to Obloquy's query. Just because a Maia is "incarnated" does not mean that all his powers have been set aside. In the case of outward appearance, Gandalf says to Gimli that Saruman could have Gimli perceive Saruman as looking like Gandalf if it suited Saruman's purposes.
