Oh I don't know Gothmog.
Maedhros feels just awful about the whole thing, and has done almost from the start. If ever there was a son of Feanor who wished he'd never heard of the Silmaril, or the silly Oath, it is Maedhros.
He'd do the right thing, given half the chance.
