Still they too have their faults. Most are rather un like Bilbo and Frodo, the'd rather sit home and eat even if they were the only ones who could save the world.
So would Bilbo have done if Gandalf hadn't more or less forced him out on the adventure. Maybe other hobbits could have been wakened? Look at someone like Sam and what he could accomplish. Who thought the gardener was up to something like that? But, Bilbo and Frodo ARE special, it's just that maybe they're not that special.

Perhaps Hobbits were made to remind the selfish greedy over ambitious humans that wealth isn't everything and that they should slow down and enjoy life.
Yes, that too! Gandalf loved Shire and the Hobbits. It was a place for him to relax in and proved that there still were people that lived outside the shadow, without fear and their greatest worry was whether the tobacco crop would grow big enough...

If the Hobbits were a chosen people of any sort, why the need for a Fellowship? The entire Quest should have been left in the hands of the Hobbits, planned and carried out completely by them. There would probably have been no need for a Strider to guide them towards Rivendell, nor indeed any reason for them to go to Rivendell in the first place. They should have set out for Mount Doom the moment Gandalf told them to leave the Shire.
Chosen doesn't mean that they were some sort of tiny superman-like creatures. It only means that they were the race that Eru chose for this quest, as you Lhunardawen, writes later in your post. Of course they needed help, but I don't think a person from any other race could have carried the ring all the way to Mordor and Orodruin. And it was for this mission Eru chose the Hobbits, they were the chosen people.

Still the chosen persons out of the chosen race (Bilbo and even more so Frodo) needed guidance and help on their way. It's not like Eru gives one individual the power to deal with this on his own, it would be all to easy. If he wanted a smooth life for everybody in ME, he would have struck down on Sauron and dragged him of to the edge of the world and then throwed him into the Void. Now he gave certain gifts to certain people and with that the possibility to deal with the power of Sauron, but then it was up to the people of ME to do what was needed.

Of course all of the members of the Fellowship was important and all the free people of ME was needed for this assignment, but the hobbits were the ones chosen to carry the greatest burden of all: the One Ring.

Well, that's my opinion...
