Maybe it wasn't so much a trap as it was a lucky accident and Mardil is just spinning the whole thing to look like a trap after the fact (to make himself look good and clever rather than hormonal). Perhaps the whole thing was, plain and simple, two people suffering from a sudden attack of strong biological and chemical attraction. Everyone knows that sort of thing is bound to happen when you get these cross-dimensional-multi-timeline mixes of people thrown together. It's one of those little known physics laws. Surely you considered that?
