Only if the Universe is a 'machine', rather than a living process. Of course, the 'Machine' meant something different to Tolkien (as we've often discussed). Tolkien claimed the Ring as the ultimate Machine, so I suppose
the
'deus ex machina' of M-e would be the Ring imbued with the life-force of Sauron.
