I think the Witch-King was awesome. When I read about his failures, they seemed acceptable for the plot. He seemed equal to Gandalf, if not stronger, at his full power. Finally, the way he was killed could have actually happened to any character, especially if they were stabbed with a super-powered weapon made to destroy him and leave him as no more than a column of sand.
The Witch-King was cooler than Sauron anyway. He just seemed more real.
