Silmaril

The Unfinished Tales are similarly written to the Silmarillion; parts of the various stories are told at greater length, and for the most part, they are (as the title says) unfinished.

The Tales from the Perilous Realm are delightful shorter stories; except for the poems 'The Adventures of Tom Bombadil', they are not about Middle-earth.

Both books are enjoyable reading, though they are completely different from one another. You've asked a question that might interest other newcomers as well, AZOG, so I'm moving this thread to the Novices and Newcomers forum. I hope others will share their opinions on both books there.
