I don't think anyone thought they were explicitly gay, just that by modern standards the Professor's description of their companionship and closeness raises eyebrows. Nor do I think
here people even find that, just that at some parts even the most pious fan will pick up on it. The films probably accentuate this, although the kissing, touching and devotion are all prevalent in the book. I don't take it seriously; I know it wasn't the original intention and find it funny anyway, as he'd probably he spinning in his grave!
