Mithadan is right, HoME is a tough (but enjoyable) read. Especially if you are going to read all the annotations and footnotes. I read the Unfinished Tales, then the Silmarillion, and then the Letters of Tolkien before I started on the History of Middle Earth. I'm currently in the middle of The Book of Lost Tales Part 2, which is the second book in the History of Middle Earth series.
