 I agree with you on the Merry-matter, but not with this one, at least wholeheartedly. I don't have much to say about Bofur, but I personally like Gloin. No personality, you say? Read Many Meetings and the Council of Elrond from LotR and you find the down-to-earth gentledwarf I appreciate. (Or then I just like the picture of him in 
Middle-earth the Wizards card game...
