since USSR joined international copyright protection assembly (or something similar, I'm not quite sure of the nomenclature) in May, 1973, books published prior to this date in the original language were considered as legal for publishing in translation without buying rights or any additional negotiations. I don't know current legal situation in Russia concerning that matter, though.
