Somehow I am inclined to think that at least the second half is metaphorical (the giants). Unless...

Unless, now it hit me, unless it refers to Bert, Tom and Bill? Then it could be... well, Bilbo (then the hunter part would be also metaphorical... uh-huh, have for TEA? The tea would fit... ) Or in other circumstances, Aragorn (as a Ranger - Hunter), but then I think it was not in the evening, but during the day... Bilbo sounds better.
