It seems to me that Arwen led a rather sheltered life (in the safety of Imladris and Lothlorien), and therefore really did not comprehend death as her father, Elrond, would (having seen millenia of war with close friends and kin dying).
I think it was very brave of Haldir volunteering to lead the regiment of elves to Helm's Deep and certain death.
