As an interesting aside, in one of Tolkien's non-ME stories, "Farmer Giles of Ham", Farmer Giles owns a blunderbuss which he didn't use much, but when he did he filled it mostly with old nails and other random schrapnel.
Of course, this has nothing to do with the inhabitants of ME (not) having/using weapons.
