The temptation to give a 'literary' story a 'genre' ending.
I've been reading too many 1930s pulps, I think... I so badly want the little girl to be all, "Quin, you are my father."
But a move like that will result in my teacher being all "I'm disappointed in you, Laura. You have such a great tone, and such command over storytelling devices, so why did you take such an easy way out in the end?"
Blah blah blah.
Mostly I just assign getting almost entirely through a story and having zero idea how to end it neatly.
