Saruman. Smart, complex, treacherous, Machiavellian in fact. Also the most &quot;modern&quot; character in the book -- in &quot;The Scouring of the Shire&quot; he was ready to turn the Shire into Airstrip One! (Wonder if JRRT had read &quot;1984&quot; or knew George Orwell? They were political opposites but both appreciated the old, unspoiled English countryside.)
Reading about Saruman's persuasive voice, I always think he must have sounded like Ronald Reagan.
