Alone? Never!
With friends to whom I was loyal, and also before whom I didn't want to seem a coward--yes.
There's also something about reaching a "point of no return," when you really can't change your mind, that screws your courage to the sticking point. Canoeing whitewater and giving birth are two examples of when I was scared out of my mind inside, but had to keep going no matter what. (Hey, there were no epidurals in my day--it was Lamaze or screaming!)
