"I was talking the wisest person around, a habit of the wise..." Apples and oranges you say? How true. But you can't go past Gandalf- powerful wizard- we never did find out the extent of his power. Without Narya he would have still been powerful enough to defeat Saruman. As for illogical, I think not. Do not mistake choices made in desperate situations as illogical :-)
