I've always assumed in a sort of "pocket dimension" to be called out if needed. That's really the only way I can think of to explain how he could have died, been given a new (and completely naked) body, be sent back,
and still have it (unless Eru was kind enought to float it out from under the muck of the mountain and have it fly back to him.
