In the book (I think it's called) the letters of Tolkien, one of the letters mentions that the books are not allegorical but that they are Topical. since they are topical, they can be applied to almost any culture. the virtues and morals that take place in the trilogy are therefore a reminder to those individuals of people in their lives who were similar to the characters in LOTR.
