So REPAY minus A gives REPY, which is an anagram (troubled) form of
PYRE, as in Pyre of Denethor. The only problem with which is, a pyre is most definitely a tool of immolation!
(Thinking about other meanings of words - eg, a verb not a noun - is another key to solving these things.)
