Since it's under discussion again... over on another forum, the tech team recently added Cloudflare specifically to prevent 508-type errors. (My understanding is that it puts a filter in between the site and incoming traffic, which will prevent most bots actually hitting the site.) Thinking about the Downs, I asked how difficult it was:

As for the process, it was fairly straightforward, in that the Claudflare folks have put together documentation for the inherently fiddly bits (namely, you have to go to the people you bought your domain from and tell them 'these are the servers whose job it is to tell the world what mydomain.com and stuff.mydomain.com mean). After that their systems will sit in front of your website and filter out the worst of the nonsense.

I've glanced at the Cloudflare website and it looks like the free plan would at least potentially be suitable for the Downs -
it's described as "personal sites, hobby projects" as opposed to "growing apps and businesses", and I think we fall more on the hobby than business end of the scale. So
if there's someone still around with the right accesses to do it... it might work?
