Re: urination

I'm telling you, like the band Led Zeppelin -- and at about the same time -- the Who included many veiled references to LotR in their albums, especially Who's Next in 1971. The cover art from that album is the illustration of a little-known scene of the four halflings ****ing on the barrow downs which appeared in the 1949 George, Allen & Unwin edition of LotR but which was suppressed in the American translation. In the scene, Frodo was attempting to teach the other hobbits how to "draw" the alphabet of Feanor. It was on this occasion that Sam made his classic jest,
Quote:
"I have besmirched my hairy foot with the malta I was making."

Critics have long debated whether the reference to the tengwa character is best understood as a metonymous reference to Sam's appreciation for malted beverages or whether Sam understood enough Quenya to be playing on the association "golden shower."
What the critics overlook is JRRT's penchant for symbolic foreshadowings. In this case Sam's later planting of the Mallorn is understood as the essential gesture of his role as restorer of the Shire's fertility. Sam -- by virtue of his symbolic golden shower -- was the halfling envinyatar, paralelling Aragorn's role as ME's "rain king." This proved JRRT's essential thesis that the age of heroes was ending and that in the fourth age of the lesser mortals "the penis mightier than the sword."
