Five and forty leagues as the crow flies. Of course it was appreciably farther afoot. Otherwise their progress of less than ten miles a day would have been most unimpressive, even on wild ground. Grotta, however, says that JRRT used military ordinance surveys to accurately gage how much ground individuals and troops on the march could be expected to cover.
