Ungoliant - a giant spider, who spinned a total darkness around herself. She was the foremother (sp?) the Shelob (an other giant spider, the one who nearly killed Frodo in TTT, because Gollum betrayed them). Ungoliant was dangerous to even Morgoth, and a Balrog had to help him out of trouble. After that, she went into a cave in Ephel Duath.
