Actually, the Nazgûl on winged steeds could remind of the German Junkers 52 tac bomber which became known as 'Stuka' (for Sturzkampf-Flieger, because of their head-on attack style). Both had similar use, were quite new to warfare, and had a psychological effect of scaring enemies (the Nazgûl with their screams, the Stukas with their head-on attack and built-in sirens).
