At the conclusion of the Council of Elrond (Bk II, Chap 2) the question is asked who is to take the Ring. Tolkien writes...
'No one answered. The noon-bell rang. Still no one spoke. The 'ting' that you hear is
supposed to be 'the noon-bell'... Oh, welll......
