You know, this is somehow real fun, both to make them up, and be specific in style, words, and so on, and to solve them, where you have to interpretate every detail.
I even think that Fangorn could have said it to the Hobbits - he would have changed his mind not to help them were there too many hasty little creatures (and when he says "I" he means both Treebeard himself and the whole forest); and he himself, as the whole entity of the Forest of Fangorn, would have been changed because of more "intruders", tramnpling, or unintentionally hurting the trees.
And the quote is a good one - not too explicit, and of the kind which evokes associations in the reader. This is the essence of this game IMO.
