Actually they do. I can't find the exact quote at the moment, but Tolkien does mention this in LotR, along with the foolish belief of some men that there are no Dwarf women, and the Dwarves just spring out of stone. I clearly remember having a conversation with my brother on the subject back when we were first reading LotR, which was before TTT came out.
