I have just started reading the Silmarillion and a (unfortunately not very pleasant) thought occurs to me.

Why didn't Morgoth kill off all the Elves shortly after they first awakened? He was aware of them before the Valar and surely had the means to discover their dwellings and eliminate them before Orome discovered them.

PS I apologise if this has been asked before, but I couldn't get the search function to work.
