Well not only is there the other evidence but lookit
when Legolas,Gimli,and Aragorn meet up with Merry and Pippin at Isengaurd,there was bacon,"first rate salted pork",honey,bread,wine,beer,and leaf no vegetables so apparently Legolas had to eat meat or go with just bread -a most unsatisfying meal- but I think that they eat meat PERIODICALLY not all the time
