The first thing I thought of, and I'm pretty sure I'm on a major sidetrack [img]smilies/wink.gif[/img] , was Aelfwine, Tolkien's hero of the Lost Road. the story was never finished and didn't figure significantly into Tolkien's other writings (hence buried in dust), and he was one of the 'heroic' men who could still find the straight path to the West (bringing Legends to life)...
