I just thought Gandalf meant to spend some time with Tom, since they were planning to talk while smoking, which I can imagine Goldberry not really liking to do. Interesting, however, now that I think of it, who has ever heard of Tom Bombadil smoking? Does he? Is it mentioned? Ugh, I sense a thread coming... but really? But somehow I had assumed that he does... (it's the general "I'm with the Hobbits"-style, I guess...)
