The field where the whole allegory, even if one tried to hold it, becomes obsolete, is the field of military tactics and methods.
Where is the parallel to airforces? They changed the whole style of warfare in WWII. Where are the tanks? They made war mobile again. Where the AD-guns? Legolas shooting a Nazgûl? Hardly so. Where are the fleets? Naval invasions? The battlefield of Africa? Scorched earth in Eastern and Middle-Europe? The convois? Nippon? The Pacific battlefield?
This list can be continued ad infinitum. Tolkien knew such aforementioned things. They do not show in his books. Hence no allegory possible.
