Eärendil was a half-elven as was his wife Elwing. As explained in The Silmarillion, chapter 24, "Of the Voyage of Eärendil" concerning their coming to Valinor:
Quote:
****But when was as spoken, Manwë gave judgement, and he said: 'In this matter the power of doom is given to me. The peril that he ventured for love of the Two Kindreds shall not fall upon Eärendil, nor shall it fall upon Elwing his wife, who entered into peril for love of him; but they shall not walk again ever among Elves or Men in the Outer Lands. And this is my decree concerning them: to Eärendil and to Elwing, and to their sons, shall be given leave each to choose freely to which kindred their fates shall be joined , and under which kindred they shall be judged.'

Soon the choice is made:
Quote:
****Then Eärendi said to Elwing: 'Choose thou, for now I am weary of the world.' And Elwing chose to be judged among the Firstborn Children of Ilúvatar, because of Lúthien; and for her sake Eärendil chose alike, though his heart was rather with the kindred of Men and the people of his father.

So Eärendil and Elwing become undying, but may not "walk again ever among Elves or Men in the Outer Lands." Later, after Eärendil in the War of Wrath slays Ancalagon the Black:
Quote:
****But Morgoth himself the Valar thrust through the Door of Night beyond the Walls of the World, into the Timeless Void; and a guard is set for ever on those walls, and Eärendil keeps watch upon the ramparts of the sky.

Christopher Tolkien then omitted the prophecy of Mandos from the text because of a later indication at the end of the Valaquenta there was no prophesy of the renewal of Arda, and he adapted that note to provide a new ending to The Silmarillion. But the pertinent part of the prophrecy from The Lost Road (HoME 5) is:
Quote:
When the world is old and the Powers grow weary, then Morgoth, seeing that the guard sleepeth, shall come back through the Door of Night out of the Timeless Void; and he shall destroy the Sun and Moon. But Eärendel shall descend upon him as a white and searing flame and drive him from the airs. Then shall the Last Battle be gathered on the fields of Valinor.
