Rather sad that someone so talented should die so relatively young. I had not realised how much Carpenter had written, how many other biographies of famous writers, and how central comedy was to him. Tolkien, Auden and Pound make for a very interesting mix, to say nothing of Spike Milligan. I had been hoping that eventually Carpenter would be able to produce an expanded edition of the Letters, maybe even include the diary. How I would like to have been present at that luncheon!. Thank you for the link,Lalaith.

A fitting tribute for a rather sad event. Coincidentally, my girlfriend just bought me Carpenter's Tolkien biography for Christmas. I believe I'll start reading tomorrow. (I'm moving this to the announcements forum since it's not a discussion.)
