Well I am currently reading the BOOK for the 7th time, and am wondering how Henneth Annun is able to be kept secret from Sauron or his armies when it is lies so extraordinarily close to Mordor.

You would think that Sauron's flying spies would have spotted it from the airs, or something like that.

Anyone got any comments ?

Another Henneth Annun remark, it must have been a very big cavern to house the several hundred of Faramir's men. I can't remember if Tolkien mentioned if it was a natural or man-made cave ?

By the way, for those who have not read up to this part or cannot remember, Henneth Annun is a water fall in Ithilien, called by the Men of Gondor, the Window of the Sunset.

It was well hidden, I guess. I would think that it was a natural cave that the men of Gondor improved, but I don't know if it says so in the text.

Plus it was a waterfall. Nazgûl could not stand water very well (except Khamul) and the other evil creatures probably were driven off by it, too.

But that does not explain why Sauron had no idea of the presence of such a 'holy' Gondorian place so near to his land.
Especially as he seemed to have such a powerful mind, he probably could have felt the nearby presence of Faramir or his men. If not him at his Nazguls or troups of orcs would have stumbled across some indication of the presence of Henneth Annun.

Sauron didn't even see the Ring at Mount Doom until too late, so its unlikely he'd have 'sensed' Faramir and his merry men running around secret tunnels in Ithilien.

The reason why he did not see or sense the ring at mount Doom is because his attention was 100 percent on the battle with Gandalf and Aragorn.
As opposed to Henneth Annun which had been there for years...

But it was the RING.... not just one man out of millions. It was THE ring. HIS Ring. And when he was looking outwards from Barad-dur towards Amon Hen, even then he couldn't see Frodo and the Ring.

Sauron was just not the omnipotent being you suggest. He ralied on servants to find Faramir... anf they were unsuccessful.

I am willing to go with the Atlas of Middle Earth on this. Henneth Annun was gouged out by the stream that was flowing over the falls. The men of Gondor worked the stream to flow over its old course over the falls and sealed off the back, creating the ultimate hideout.

This was always one of my favorite places when reading the book. The description of the window to the West and the sun really filled my mind with a beauty unmatched.

He did not relinquish his royalty in Gondor, nor intend that the realm of Elendil should be divided forever.
