If I understand this at all rightly, Bombadil was called Iarwain by the Teleri. And I think that I understand that Iarwain means "old-holy" from the stems iaur and aina. This hardly clinches anything about his identity, mind you, but I really like Kittle's last suggestion and I don't think that it offers any contradiction to that. Isn't he also called Ben-adar, fatherless?
