I started fencing at about the same time that I discovered Professor Tolkien's books but I never made a connection between the two.

I find it difficult to imagine any of the warriors of Middle Earth handling anything as flimsy as a fencing foil. Fencing, or any of the so-called martial arts, has more in common with ball-room dancing than it has with real fighting.
