Here's something I could see happening: Sometime while they're still in the fellowship together, Pippin points out to Frodo that he has a few gray curls on the back of his head.

"WHAT! Where are they, I want to see! Gads! I'm only 50! And I bloody own the stupid ring of power! Vitality my foot!"

"Bilbo has grey hair..."

"Shut up! Everybody just shut UP! Legolas, can I borrow some of that dye?"
