Heh, I was waiting for questions...
The star-shaped stone is simply a suggestion - that will never be vocalised - of Numenorean blood somewhere down the family tree (for Guthrin). As you may have realised, a great doom is upon this man...he is dragged into events against his will as it were, and I would like to continue with that. He will become more and more distant from his fellow travellers, even as he becomes more and more useful to them. I confess to some mischief in my first Rohan post where I suggested that he was the one Saruman was afraid of; mere playfulness it is however, and can be ignored or used, as the story wills. Guthrin was well-trained in all the arts of war - his father was the wealthiest man in his hometown and supplied him with the best of everything - but these skills were not backed with any experience. Guthrin will never be a particularly likeable character and that is all to the good, for I fear he shall meet a tragic end as events unfold in the city at the culmination of our journey...
