'I can't find the pie. She's hidden that too well. But here are the cookies she made this morning.' He turned round with the cookie jar tucked under his left arm, his right hand well into it. A smile spread across his face as he pulled out a plump jam filled cookie and popped it in his mouth.

A look of delight followed as he savored the rich crisp cookie and the sweet, thick blackberry jam between the layers. He grinned, a few crumbs escaping his mouth to fall on his tunic front.

'Life is short.' he said, looking at Rie as he picked out another cookie. 'Eat dessert first.'

He popped the cookie in his mouth and picked up his sandwich plate. 'Aah!.' he mumbled, through the half chewed cookie. 'Plenty of mustard, just like I like it!'

He went through the swinging kitchen door, and leaning against it as it met the wall, held it open for Rie.

'Look! Pio's serving up free ale. Let's grab us a couple of pints and sit down there, by the window.'
