In my opinion all characters mentioned here are hero's in one way or another, but i think you forget the one who did the greatest deed of all times.
Eärendil, he was the one sailing the seas and finding the land shut for them. If he didn't do this deed, all other deeds would have been in vain for Morgoth was winning at the time. Even Doriath and Gondolin were no more. I guess this deed has earned him the title of 'Greatest Hero of all Ages'.
