After reading over a few things today in search of quotes for another topic, I came across several bits and thought they might stir things up a bit. <blockquote>Quote:<hr> As for any inner meaning or 'message', it has in the intention of the author none. As for 'message': I have none really, if by that is meant the conscious purpose in writing The Lord of the Rings, of preaching, or of delivering myself of a vision of truth specially revealed to me! I was primarily writing an exciting story in an atmosphere and background such as I find personally attractive. (Letter 208, Letters)<hr></blockquote>While I agree that Tolkien's work is informed by and reflects his Christian beliefs, it may be going too far to assert that he viewed his work as &quot;primarily religious&quot;.
