I thought that he was given it because you do see Narsil and doesn't Bilbo say something like "I forgot to get your sword reforged with the others so here have my old swprd Sting" That may be wrong though. And also I could swear that Boromir kissed his Sword when he was dying and swore that he would of served Aragorn as the King (or something like that). His sword was definately different and the hilt looked like that of Narsil's when you see it in Imladris (Rivendell).
