Best Acting: Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. He did a superb job at conveying the difficulties that character went through with himself and Boromir.
Best Place: Oooh, a toughy, um, I think it would have to be Hobbiton
Worst Acting: What worst acting?
Worst Place: Is there such a thing as well?

Best acting? Sir Ian was Gandalf and Andy Serkis did a brilliant job with Gollum. Also Sean Bean and Viggo Mortensen went up in my estimation. Any reservations I have, are with parts of the script, not with any particular actor.
Best set was Rivendell....I still get the oooh! factor every time I watch the dvd. However, for sheer enjoyment I have to pick the Battle for Helm's Deep as my favourite part so far.

I think all of the actors have done wonderfully and I can't complain at all! I liked Faramir in the book, but in the movie he came across as plain evil! But when I think about the movie and about the book I try to think of them as two seperate things only slightly linked, so I'm not too discriminatory against one or the other. (Like I think in terms of book-Frodo and movie-Frodo. I try to seperate them a bit) That way, I'm not critical ^^ I can say I like the movie AND the book and that I am not just a movie or a book fan, I like BOTH. If you get what I'm saying. But I think all of the actors did WONDERFUL, even if some of the parts were written a little off key.

Well the best was Aragorn. He did a great job. If this movie was ever to be redone they would nv get anyone to play it better than he did. They could replace Sam and Frodo and others but not him. Also Pippin. Billy Boyd did a great job with him. Same with Gandalf.
The worst was Farimir. In the movies he was all mean to the hobbits and stuff when in the book he helped them alot. They really wrote a bad part for him.
Best places:Mordor and Moria. They were so cool. Also Rivendale. They were so cool and they fit with what they were like in the movies
The worst was Helms Deep.
I mean it was cool and all but they messed it all up.
I mean why did they bring elvs? Aren't they supposed to be fading from middle earth? If so were did they all come from? And it took up so much time. It looked cool and stuff but they screwed with they story line too much. Actually i didn't really like TTT very much. I mean it is a cool movie but it didn't fit they book very much. I just hope that they didn't do that to ROTK.

quote:
Frodo- I actually thought he was amazing...or very good, at leadt. Hedoes looki like he''s gonna start crying any moment, but I think that that was deliberate. I thought that it was just meant to symbolize the weight of the Ring on him. It's not like he couldn't be all merry and happy, you saw in the first movie, at the party, and in the extended version in the pub. It was just that if he had been like that in the other parts, we would all be making fun of him for that. Also, I thought that he was one of the three actors for whom you could just tell what their character was thinking by the look on their face.
Sam- The first time I saw TTT, I thought he was real corny, but as I saw it more and more times it semed like he got better. He was pretty much the way I imagined him, except that he would have been less- well, i don't know. I thought he was not bad though, and he looked very earnest. The "they'll put us into stories?" thing at the end was kind of strange, but still good.
Merry- I liked him more in TTT. It's Pip's role to do comic relief- Mery was basically good, just a little more shallow than some of the others.
Pip- Pretty much same, except he's funny.
Gimli- Hmm...not too great. Leave the humor to the hobbits, you'll be better off. Not too bad, and he's not a bad actor, as we'll see with Treebeard, just...I dunno.
I gotta go, school tomoroorw, not done with homework, but I'll type out the rest later.

Aragorn- Wow. I'm impressed. The vharacter is not initally tooo complicated, but Viggo is great, and shows that Aragorn has his own troubles to add to those of all Middle Earth. He was quite good, excpet the piece with him falling off of the cliff was rather strange. First time I saw it, I hadn't realized PJ might add stuff to the plot of the book, so I thought my memory was going real bad, which is sorta strange for somebody still in school....also, I think they should definitely have cut out the part where he screams and totally loses control of himself, becuase that just went too far out of character. Still, maybe if he hadn't broken his toe on that, maybe it wouldn't have been as loud...
Legolas- I think he is very goodlooking, but am NOT a Leggybopper, so don't try to kill me!!! In the book he wasn't given much of a role, so he did well enough with what he was given. Better than others, anyway.
Gandalf- Good. I like the way he plays it, just how I imagined him.
I gotta go, I'll continue Gandalf tomorrow.

I think that the best portrayal was Sean Astin as Sam. He conveyed deeply the strong protective feeling his character held for his master Frodo.
I will have to think for a while about the worst...

I really thought that almost all of the actors/actresses portrayed thier parts beautifully. Arawen {Liv Tyler}'s performance wasnt bad...but there wasnt anything special there i dont think... I thought all 4 hobbits were wonderful...and my favorite race {da elves} was portrayed amazingly--just as Tolkien would have done it! (loved Legolas!)
I also loved Hobbiton, Rivendell and Lothlorien
'cant right now think of a certain setting i specifically DIDnt Like....More soon...
xox much love! xox

I don't know if it's my place to make any judgements on the first movie, since I saw the movie before reading the books, but I just have to say something about Sean Astin and Sean Bean. The former (and I noticed this after reading the first few chapters of FotR) did an amazing job portraying Sam. Astin's performance was one of the main reasons Sam became my favorite character. Now, having finished the books, I can't imagine anyone else being better for the role.
As for Sean Bean - I really can't give this guy enough praise. That scene in Lothlorien? I know it wasn't in the book, but it was one of my favorite scenes in the film. You just feel for him. That look in his eyes when he's telling Aragorn about Minas Tirith - it's like he's looking beyond the forests and gazing upon the city itself. While reading the books, I did my best to create my own images of the characters, but so help me I just could not do it for Boromir or Sam. I really can't see anyone else in those roles.
And I haven't noticed anyone mention Ian Holm, who I think deserves some praise. It just seemed to me like he had something that was distinctly "Bilbo".
Someone else I'd like to mention, and I know a bunch of people will probably disagree, but I really liked what Christopher Lee did with Saruman, if only because of his voice. I mean, Tolkien dedicated an entire chapter to "The Voice of Saruman", so you know it was a thing of power. And I don't know about the rest of you, but if Christopher Lee told me, in his most commanding voice, to go burn a village, I'd light my torch and take off running.
But that's just me.
For TTT: I actually really liked Bernard Hill as Théoden. I was almost in tears when he started reciting "Where are the horse and the rider?" And I think Brad Dourif was a perfect Wormtongue. Why? Because he creeped me out, that's why.
And of course, I think David Wenham did an incredible job with what he had, and I think, if the script allows it, he'll give us an excellent Faramir come December.

Your opinion is as valids as anyone's.
I agree with everything in your post, especially the bit about Ian Holm. For me, his portrayal of Bilbo was one of the best things about FotR.
H.C.
[ April 03, 2003: Message edited by: HCIsland ]
