| LOTR & The Beatles...

If any of you own the book "The Magical Worlds of the Lord of the Rings" by David Colbert, than you probably already know about this, but here is a little tidbit that I found quite amusing:

quote:
In the 1960s, the Beatles wanted to star in a film of LOTR. Frodo would have been played by Paul McCartney, Sam Gamgee by Ringo Starr, Gandalf by George Harrison, and Gollum by John Lennon. Imagine!

How do you think this would have turned out if it had been attempted?

The Monkees as orcs! *cracks up* This version wouldn't be very serious at all...

Ringo Starr as Sam Gangee? The mind boggles. No, I am glad that this version never took shape, although I'm sure it would have been a bit of fun if it had. Mr. Jackson is doing a fine job interpreting the books in his trilogy, and as for the cartoon movies.... No comment.

That would have been the funniest thing on Earth, little alone Middle-earth! It would have been more of a comedy than an action/adventure film. Somehow I wish it did come together!

It would have been great to see, but it would have been taken as a spoof. Perhaps it would have gone down better if they were unknown.

One thing is for sure - they would need not to use any wigs ...
(I saw all this LotR and Beatles thing on TV but I do not quite remember all what was said there)

This topic sounds like it would be a bit better suited for the Middle Earth Mirth forum, but to add my two cents, I wonder if they would have done the songs in the book? That would have been truly...interesting.
Peace

But think about it: there is some similarity in the looks of EW and Paul. Both have baby/young faces, right?
But\...if you'll notice...that the move "Help!" is centered around a RING? And that Ringo's name is...well, "Ring"-o?
I would have thought that John would have wanted to play Gandalf, for some reason.
The song "In My Life" might have fit.

*Har har* I can't imagine how the Beatles would look ... If they did work on that movie, I guess they'd have their "friends", the Rolling Stones in it too. Hee-hee!
Tolkien could have been one of Lennon's major influences - think about it. He was probably inspired to write profound poetry, but ended up writing pop songs.

That would have been sooo cool! I want to know who would have played the other members of the Fellowship - would they have got other people to do that or would they have just done all the parts themselves?
I like the idea of the characters singing Beatles songs...oh the possibilities! lol

Actually, as a very well read Beatles fan and LotR fan, I would like to see his source material on this claim. It could easily have been a joke by John Lennon, I suppose. It doesn't seem credible, and I am always wary of secondary source material.
As for the movie itself, as a purist I would probably hate it and as a Beatles fan I would probably laugh until I cried.
