Hey that was a good one, I had to think about it for a bit... eh bout 4-5 extra seconds that is
 Hirgon-> Adalgrim Took Three separations or less and no Gandalf.

None of the above! I'm not counting Pippin as knowing Adalgrim since it never really says. There is one very small instance where one charcter passes by another, and it is a very hard thing to catch, which is precisely why I used this puzzle!
