During the period the Fellowship dwelt at Rivendell, Elrond sent out scouts to many different regions of Middle-Earth. Elros and Ellrohir (one L or two??) went on a covert mission that they would not speak of. Did UT or any other source elaborate on this mission? What would be of such a concern that they could not speak even to Gandalf, or the Ringbearer?

I think that you mean Elladan and Elrohir. Elros was the brother of Elrond and the first king of Numenor. Elladan and Elrohir were Elrond's sons and I to would like to have a little light shed on this subject. I remember that Aragorn was not at the feast in Rivendell where Frodo and Gloin talked but I do not know what the errand was that was so important that they could only tell it to Aragorn and Elrond.

I'm not sure either about their mission. However, I believe that it was probably news of some importance about orcs or even concerning Elrond and/or Galadriel's elven rings that they told Elrond. If I remember correctly Elladan and Elrohir went to 'a strange country beyond the Silverlode' or something like that. I believe that they went to Lothlorien and maybe had some personal news from Galadriel, but what it would be about I can only guess.

I've wondered about this myself. I asked my Tril. teacher, but she just looked at me (any teenager with a moody mother knows what I mean by the look). She claimed that "As Tolkien didn't elaborate, it can't possibly have been important.", but haven't we all learned that if it was mentioned, it was important, when it comes the Lord of the Rings?

Elladan and Elrohir were brothers of Arwen and thus the sons Elrond and Celebrian. Celebrian is the reason of their mission.
I do know all of it in detail, but I believe it's something like this in headlines. Celebrian, daughter of Galadriel, wedded Elrond and went to live with him in Rivendell where they had two sons, Elrohir and Elladan, and a daughter, Arwen. One day she set out with her maidens to visit her kin in Lothlorien, but was waylaid in a pass in the Misty Mountains by orcs. The orcs tormented Celebrian and her followers. Meanwhile word of this reached her sons and they set out to rescue their mother. They did so! But Celebrian was treated and tormented so badly that she was nearly alive and didn't know anything anymore. She didn't want to live in Middle-earth anymore and took ship to Valinor (I do not know if she lived or died their). Ever since this happened Elrohir and Elladan go out often to waylay orcs and destroy their plans. They never forgot their mothers torment and never stopped hunting down orcs. greetings, lathspell

Didn't the mission that Elladan, Elrohir, and Aragorn go on while the Fellowship was Rivendell have something to do with the wars that the other races of elves were at the time involved in because of the growing forces of Sauron? For some reason that is what I have always thought they were gone for.

Hey, Elves can die in Valinor too! They can just sit back and relax, and their souls went to Mandos. (It does seem that the Halls of Mandos are the ultimate peace for Elves)
Aragorn was said to have gone under disguise to fight wars against Sauron in the Armies of both Gondor and Rohan. I suspect that the sons of Elrond would appear too Elvish to join either army, but it would not be surprising if they serve as scouts and messengers between Rivendell and other Elven havens such as Loth-lorien and Thranduil's Halls. Perhaps, they would not speak of their missions they may seem too unrelated and mundane to the great Gandalf? ![]() "Hello, Grandma! Here's a sweater that our sis wove! Dad send us along to ask to recipe to brewing cherry-favoured miruvor."- Elros and Elrohir "My! How tall my beauties have grown! Send this along to your Dad, please, and here are some waybread for me beauties!" - Galadriel (Shudder)

Gorwingel - i did not mean that Celebrain would die of age, for that indeed would not be the case being an elf. I simply asked myself, since I didn't have the books, whether or not she died in Valinor because of the torments and her grief. Many Elves died of grief and some did in Valinor.
