I think that "The Lord of the Rings" could easily be right, but if not, I'll venture to guess that it is the War of Wrath, if only because there were three "divisions" of elves: Vanyar, Noldor, Teleri.

Anyway, here is a new riddle!

He had to choose, and he chose death,
but not by sword, 'stead loss of breath.
His father sailed, and all were saved,
his brother passed form the 3rd age.

I'll say...Elros. He chose mortality (death), and he died of age (breath), his father Earendil sails in the sky with the simaril (sails), and Elrond (brother) was the start of the fourth age! That should do!

The wham part is a bit out of character, but it fits.

And a good riddle it was (and not at all as mafioso as I'd expected)!

I don't want to shirk my duty again, but I'd like to offer the thread to Anguirel, because but for him I'd never have thought of Caranthir and the Haladin. If he declines or hasn't posted by tomorrow, I'll put something up then. (I have an idea already, just have to think a bit about how to word it.)

The riddle's narrator sounds kind of dwarvish, I think.
